Remember Tim (The Tool Man) Taylor?  His love for tools and the power they gave him became a continual source of entertainment throughout the run of his television show. Tools were everything to him. Even though his ideas were “slightly” over the top, his love for tools struck a chord with every man who watched the show.

Men love tools, any kind of tool that gets the job done. Hammers, saws, computers, cars, a big home, success in business – they’re all tools that get the job done in presenting who we are to the world. As husbands and fathers, we have been given the job of providing a safe atmosphere where our wives and children can prosper in Christ. Success or failure in this arena impacts many people, and also represents who we are to the world. Our families should be a testimony of our proper use of the tools God’s given us to overcome the world.

Have you ever thought of praising Jesus as a tool? What about worship? When you think of power, does worship of our heavenly Father come to mind? How about prayer, the most powerful tool available to man? Do you see these tools provided for you as a means to truly win the war that’s against your family? If not, why not?

Do you know that every human has been built to highly honor something? The enemy has camouflaged that basic need by distorting it in the minds of those who submit to him. He crafts that need into a desire to cherish relationships, personal comfort, vanity, money, fame, or a myriad of other lusts of the flesh available in his arsenal. No matter what they look like, they are simply ways of fulfilling the basic need to highly esteem something.

God intended that this desire be fulfilled by honoring Him above all else. When we do so, there is the ultimate fulfillment because that is why we have been created. It is the deepest longing of our nature. Only when we honor God is our desire complete. Everything else is a longing that can never be satisfied. It is a continual chase after that empty feeling deep inside each of us.

Man of God, if you want to find the ultimate fulfillment, and the toys, money, or success you thought would satisfy you haven’t done so, you need to turn your honor and esteem to God alone. As you do that, you will find full satisfaction in your heart and a completion of your deepest longings. That elusive chase will be over. You will finally be fulfilled. Are you heading in the right direction?

Let’s see. The God of the universe invites the first man and woman into His presence. He vows to take care of all their needs, have intimate communication with them, and promises to be their loving Father. He further allows them to live in a paradise beyond beautiful with Him. To all of this, they respond with the ultimate act of insanity. In essence, they say no!

God offers Himself to them. Granted, there is a condition involved; but they choose to rebel. It is the epitome of reprobate thinking. How could any thinking human being turn down an offer from a sovereign God to be their Friend – a most powerful, loyal, all-providing Friend in the truest sense of the word?

Man of God, you have been given the same offer. Because of the work of the cross of Jesus Christ, the glorious intimacy offered in the Garden of Eden has been restored. It has been made available to anyone who desires to have it. You, as a husband and father, have intimate access to the most amazing God for help with your every desire, want, and need. You have been given access to His throne room to sit at His feet and hear the desires of His heart for you. Is it not the same kind of reprobate thinking, the same kind of insanity that Adam and Eve displayed, when you reject His offer?

Any task we are given can either be a work of love or considered just one more thing we have to do. When our lives are full – meaning that we are consumed with the business of life – one more thing added to it seems monumental. Going deeper with the Lord can be like that to someone who sees his relationship with the Lord as something other than one of love.

Being in ministry for over thirty years, I’ve found one common thread when dealing with people. Life is so in their faces that they see no way to add anything to it, even something as important as taking the time to build an intimate relationship with God. Most people have “fit Him in” somewhere between their job responsibilities and their recreational activities.

The intimate relationship with Father God has been won for us by the death of Jesus. It is the most wondrous privilege anyone can have. It invokes overwhelming joy in anyone who understands what it really means to know God and allow Him to cover his or her life completely.

If your relationship with Jesus is not the joyous center of your life, you are missing more than you know. If intimate time with your Father God in His throne room at his feet is not the reason you live, you have been blinded by the worthless sirens of this world. If you have no real joy in what it means to be a blood-bought child of God and all it entails, you are on a dead, fruitless road in life, a road opposite the one intended for you. Today your Father is calling you to reprioritize your life. He is asking you to find the joy of knowing and serving Jesus. It is a call of love! Will you answer?

Is your family for one another? I don’t mean, do they tolerate one another; I mean, are they interested in protecting the interests of the other before their own interests? Are you an example of being for your wife? Is she safe in the understanding that you will make decisions concerning her for her best interests rather than your own?

It’s mandatory in God’s eyes concerning marriage, you know! Ephesians states that you are to love your wife just as Christ loves the church. He gave up His own interests – even His life – for the church. You are to do the same for your wife.

Whether you know it or not, your children are watching how you behave with your wife. They understand your selfish, self-interested behavior, and do the same toward you and the other members of your family. They learn a self-serving spirit from you. They learn to look out for themselves first, just as you do.

On the other hand, if you serve everyone – looking out for their best interests before yours, especially your wife – you fall in line with the heart of God. His power then reigns over your family. His life is given to those who act selflessly toward others. It is the pattern Jesus set, so He honors it.

If you want your family to be healed, lay down your self-serving life and determine to serve your wife and your children with a Christ-like attitude. Become for them rather than for your own interests. It may take a while to turn the selfish tide you’ve set, but as you continue to show your children the life of Jesus through your actions, they will begin to turn their hearts also. Become for those around you, and watch the life of Jesus weave His love to all concerned.
