Every great work of art has small beginnings. Every one looks a little crude until the final pieces are in place or the final brush strokes have been painted. Some of the most brilliant works haven't been recognized for their value until after many years of sitting in some obscure corner. That period, although seemingly unimportant, may have been needed to increase the value.
